Collaging the Book: Working with Hardbacks


This workshops explores deconstructing hardback books and creating materials for collage with them. Students will construct collages with hardback book covers as the substrate for this portion of the class.


• Deconstructing hardback books
• Creating shapes from hardbacks using a utility knife or Xacto knife
• Subtracting from the hardback cover using your knives
• Peeling cover fabric from the book cover
• Using punctures and sewing as a design element
• Using more dimension, via book board, in your abstract composition.

  • Xacto knife
  • Utility knife with new, sharp blade
  • Cutting pad
  • Metal edge ruler
  • Large plastic triangle
  • Acrylic medium
  • Acrylic paints (colors you like)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Embroidery thread (colors you like)

Provided by instructor:

  • Kit/Materials Fee – $15 (payable to instructor at class time)
  • Kit fee provides for the following: Watercolor paper, book-based collage materials, paperback books, hole punches, sand paper, dust Mask, black paint, sewing needles, awls, repositionable glue sticks, pens, pencils, erasers
