Yukimi Annand – Text + Texture – Making Expressive Textures with Calligraphic Marks

Duration of Class: Three Days (18 Hours) // Medium: Mixed Media // Skill Level: All

Are you interested in incorporating calligraphic marks and textures into your artwork and/or creating calligraphic textures as your expression? Are you interested in making calligraphic marks with unfamiliar tools?

In this workshop, we will experience the usage of tools as extensions of our hand. We will start by creating marks with different writing tools and different objects. Then we will design alphabets with those new marks to write our chosen texts in various ways. We’ll examine writing speed, pressure, the directions of strokes, and the relationship between letters for making effective textures. The core of our creation will be meaning of individuals chosen text, and we will experience how the meaning of text bring to form unique letterforms and textures.

Study of layering, tones, basic design layout and composition, and use of line and space in Japanese calligraphy will be presented for creating evocative textural art pieces.
